Week of May 18 through 22

ELAR: We will explain the positive and negative impacts of advertisement techniques used in various genres of media to impact consumer behavior.  We will explain how various design techniques used in media influence the message.  We will write a persuasive commercial for an appropriate audience.  We will identify the meaning of common idioms.
Math:  We will use strategies and algorithms, including the standard algorithm, to divide up to a four-digit dividend by a one-digit divisor.
Science: We will analyze data and interpret patterns to construct reasonable explanations from data that can be observed and measured.
Texas History: We will identify, locate, and compare the geographic regions of Texas.We will describe ways people have adapted to and modified their environment in Texas, past and present.
 
Field Day: May 22nd - Please bring a plain white t-shirt by Wednesday in order to create our field day shirts.

Week of May 4th - 8th

ELAR: We will explain the positive and negative impacts of advertisement techniques used in various genres of media to impact consumer behavior.  We will explain how various design techniques used in media influence the message.  We will compare various written conventions used for digital media.  We will write a persuasive essay for appropriate audiences that establish a position and use supporting details.  We will also identify common meanings of idioms.
Math: We will determine the measure of an unknown angle formed by two non-overlapping adjacent angles given one or both angle measurements.  We will also identify relative sizes of measurement units within the customary and metric systems.
Science: We will investigate and describe the flow of energy through food webs.  
Texas History:  We will explain the meaning of various patriotic symbols and landmarks of Texas.
 
Field Trip: We will be going to the Fort Worth Zoo on May 7th. Students are asked to bring a sack lunch and wear the Seguin Roo Pride shirt.  A cost of $10.00 is needed by May 6th. If you cannot make the cost, please contact me by email or phone.

Week of April 27-May 1

ELAR:  During reading, we will explain the positive and negative impacts of advertisement techniques used in various genres of media to impact consumer behavior.  We will explain how various design techniques used in media influence the message. We will compare various written conventions used for digital media.  During writing time, we will use our reading focus to write a persuasive essay for an appropriate audience that establishes a position and uses supporting details.   During word work, we will identify the meaning of common idioms by creating an illustration of the meaning to challenge classmates.
MATH: We will classify two-dimensional figures based no the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size.  We will use a map of Weatherford to demonstrate and defend our knowledge of this expectation.
SCIENCE: We will explore how adaptations enable organisms to survive in their environment.  We will also create a new habitat for a plant or animals.  
TEXAS HISTORY: We will identify customs, celebrations, and traditions of various cultural, regional, and local groups.  We will also research and present one regional or local group in Texas such as Cinco de Mayo, Oktoberfest, Strawberry Festival, and Fiesta San Antonio.

Week of April 20th though 24th

ELAR: We will make inferences about the text using textual evidence and summarize information in order to maintain meaning and logical order.  We will also write persuasive essays for appropriate audiences that establish a position and use supporting details.  
MATH: We will apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace.  We will display, explain, and justify mathematical ideas and arguments using precise mathematical language in written or oral communication.
SCIENCE: We will explore how adaptations enable organisms to survive in their environment, such as comparing birds' beaks and leaves on plants.  We will investigate why most producers need sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make their own food, while consumers are dependent on other organisms for food.  We will also describe the flow of energy through food webs, beginning with the Sun, and predict how changes in the ecosystem affect the food web such as fire in a forest.
TEXAS HISTORY: We will identify the impact of various issues and events on life in Texas.  We will also identify customs, celebrations, and traditions of various cultural, regional, and local groups.
 
STAAR Testing this week for grades 3 though 5.  Please be mindful of bedtime, breakfast, and attendance.

Week of April 6th through 10th

ELAR:  We will write imaginative stories that build plot to a climax and contain details about the characters and setting.  We will make inferences about the text using textual evidence.  We will also summarize information in order to maintain meaning and logical order.
Math:  We will create a stem-and-leaf plot in order to solve one-and two-stem problems.  We will also describe how to allocate a weekly allowance among spending, including for college and sharing.
Science: We will explore characteristics and likenesses to determine if it is a learned or an inherited trait.  We will also explore, determine, and classify our own unique characteristics to determine if it is an inherited or learned trait.
Texas History:  We will explain the development and impact of oil and gas industry upon industrialization and urbanization in Texas.  We will also identify the accomplishments of notable individuals found in Chapter 11.

Week of March 23-27

ELAR:  We will summarize the main idea and supporting details in text in ways that maintain meaning.  We will revise drafts for coherence, organization, use of simple and compound sentences, and audience.  We will edit drafts for grammar, mechanics, and spelling.  
Math:  We will represent problems using an input-output table and use numerical expressions to generate a number pattern that follows a given rule representing the relationship of values and their position in a sequence.
Science:  We will demonstrate that some likenesses between parents and offspring are inherited, passed from generation to generation, such as eye color in humans or shapes of leaves in plants. Other likenesses are learned, such as table manners, reading a book, and seals balancing balls on their noses.
Texas History:  We will explain the development and impact of oil and gas industry upon industrialization and urbanization in Texas and identify the accomplishments of notable individuals.
